Neuralink: The Incredible Engineering Triumph of Implantable Technology

Founded by Elon Musk in 2016, Neuralink has set its mission on creating a brain-computer interface for the general public. Science fiction is here with the beginning of the next step in human evolution. Aiming to merge the capabilities of the human brain and artificial intelligence, this company and its founder are unlocking the secrets to advancing humanity into the next great awakening. What does this step in technology mean for humanity? In this blog, we will briefly cover what we know about the pioneering technology Neuralink hopes to one-day mass produce, and how Neuralink would revolutionize everyday life and medicine if they are successful.

What Does Neuralink Hope to Accomplish?

Neuralink’s goal is to enhance human capabilities and address various neurological disorders. After the FDA approved Neuralink for human trials, founder Elon Musk stated clinical trials are set to begin by the end of 2023. While the application of Neuralink implantable chips is broad, the company seems to be currently aiming at the medical side of the technology. As stated on the Neuralink website, some criteria to participate in the clinical trials include quadriplegia, paraplegia, vision loss, hearing loss, and/or the inability to speak. Neuralink implantable technology could help individuals with neurological conditions such as paralysis, spinal cord injuries, or neurodegenerative diseases regain motor functions. These brain implants could be the key in changing the lives of those who face crippling disorders and diseases.

Neuralink is Creating More than Just the Chips

Neuralink is also designing a surgical robot to conduct implant surgeries. As stated by the Neuralink company, “The threads of our implant are so fine that they can't be inserted by the human hand.” The surgical robot will be used to insert the chips and their components perfectly into the body while minimizing potential damage. Neuralink is not just creating an implantable device, but a new field in medicine and technology.

There is a Long Way to Go

While human testing has recently been approved by the FDA, Neuralink still has a lot of work to do. The technology is far from ready, but what they currently have seems promising. The combination of a computer's quick thinking and the creativity and complexity of the human brain is an incredible achievement to strive for. The next level of human capability may just be a couple of decades away.
